Aldi Süd bucks industry trend with sugar tax support

Aldi Süd has backed the government’s proposed tax on sugary soft drinks, diverging from most industry groups and rival Edeka. It called for the levy to be charged to manufacturers according to sugar content, encouraging reformulation of branded and private-label products. Aldi Süd proposed an 18-month transition and exemptions for fruit juices, milk drinks and plant-based alternatives. (Lebensmittel Praxis)
